Getting Started: Why Use Headphones When You Record?

My new YouTube series on Getting Started continues with a short video that establishes the need to use headphones to monitor your audio while recording your music.

This new video explains:

  1. How audio bleed or bleeding can ruin your recordings

  2. What the click track does to help your performance

  3. The difference between headphones and a headset

Since posting a basic BandLab tutorial, I've had a lot people ask why their audio tracks are being recorded together onto the same track instead of being properly isolated to multiple tracks.

If nothing else, remember that the microphone's job is to record whatever audio it can hear.

It occurred to me that we need to take a few steps back and start at the very beginning to properly explain what multi-track recording lets you do and the basic techniques you need to understand to start recording your music using free mobile apps like BandLab and GarageBand.

While this Getting Started playlist may seem quite basic for some, it is intended to help those just starting out with home recording—especially those impacted by COVID-19 and can no longer rely on live performances alone to reach their audience and make a living.

Remember too that plenty of talented musicians are fantastic at performing but may not have had to record themselves on their own before. There’s no shame in getting stated and there are no silly questions, really. Help each other by offering what knowledge or skills you can, where you can.

Recording your music can create more potential revenue streams and we need to be helping each other keep the new music flowing regardless. Recording at home is fast becoming a realistic option—if not a necessity—for many independent artists.

If you or someone you know is struggling to get their music out there, please reach out with any questions or suggestions for future tutorials that can enable more musicians to realize their goals.

I'm always glad to help create a positive impact through our music.
